The burgeoning of highly complex algorithms used for assessment in the judicial field continues to challenge the underpinnings of justice in America. COMPAS, or Correctional Offender Management Profiling for Alternative Sanctions is a software used to assess recidivism risks when determining pretrial release and parole possibility. In 2016, a ProPublica investigation discovered significant inconsistencies in rates assigned to White offenders and Black offenders. These findings play into a nuanced dialogue about how — and if — algorithmic decision-making should be leveraged in the legal field
